Seafood Task Force Expands Thailand's Vessel Safety Training Programme with Sessions in Samut Prakarn and Chonburi

Bangkok, 3 June 2025

In an ongoing programme aimed at enhancing the health and safety of Thai fishermen working on Thai vessels, the Seafood Task Force (STF) has successfully conducted its first two health and safety training sessions for 2025, marking continued progress in the organisations industry-wide remediation and continuous improvement programme.

The training sessions took place on 14th May in Samut Prakarn and 16th May in Chonburi, bringing together over 120 participants as part of ongoing efforts to enhance workplace safety standards across Thailand's fishing industry.

The initiative was spearheaded by the STF's Dr. Rawee Viriyatum, with support from the Thai Department of Fisheries (DoF), Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Center (Thai-MECC), and the National Fisheries Association of Thailand (NFAT) who provided suitable training facilities.

Water rescue experts from Abhakornkiartiwong Hospital brought specialised training across both locations, delivering a comprehensive curriculum that included basic first aid, CPR techniques, hazardous work protocols for confined spaces on fishing vessels, basic water rescue techniques, water survival practice and basic fire safety protocols.

These sessions have a focus on equipping vessel workers with essential life-saving skills and this ongoing STF programme represents a significant step towards creating safer vessel working environments in Thailand. Participants engage in hands-on practical exercises designed to simulate real-world emergency scenarios encountered at sea, equipping them with essential life-saving skills applicable to their daily working environments.

The collaborative approach involving government agencies, civil society organisations, and industry stakeholders demonstrates the STF's commitment to creating sustainable, scalable solutions that address health and safety challenges across Thailand's fishing sector.

The programme's continued expansion follows similar initiatives that started in December 2023 in Prachuab Khiri Khan and Chumphon and reflecting growing recognition of the importance of comprehensive safety training in protecting the welfare of seafarers.

About the Seafood Task Force:

The Seafood Task Force (STF) was established in 2014 to restore global confidence to trade, following concerns about social and environmental abuse in global tuna and shrimp supply chains. It is made up of over 50 major retailers, brands, food service companies and their supply chain partners.

The STF drives supply chain oversight at scale, pioneering a pro-competitive approach that makes it easier for its members to meet international standards and growing due diligence requirements.

The STF is a US-based, not-for-profit trade association established for the seafood industry by the seafood industry. Its vision is a future where its members’ seafood supply chains are fully traceable, free from the risk of human rights violations and free from environmental degradation.
